IROC's Community Engagement Workgroup members collaborate on a variety of projects. Our goal is to provide resources that are useful to patients and families facing chronic kidney disease. In 2018, we started a listing of available kidney scholarships.

Scholarship Name: HBCU Organ and Tissue Donation Advocacy Scholarship
Summary: Five $1000 scholarships to HBCU students who have an interest in organ donation advocacy. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be enrolled at a Historically Black College or University.

Scholarship Name: Laurie Smith Memorial Scholarship
Summary: $1000 scholarship to a student who is a transplant recipient, in honor of Laurie Smith, the mother of a heart transplant recipient. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be transplant recipients.

Scholarship Name: Student Advocacy Scholarship
Summary: Five $1000 scholarships to college students who are organ, eye, and tissue donation advocates. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be interested in saving lives through organ donation advocacy.

Scholarship Name: The AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability
Summary: $1,000 scholarship to a full-time undergraduate (sophomore and above) or graduate student with a disability who is studying the disability, public health, or other health-related field.

Scholarship Name: Dialysis Scholarship Fund
Summary: Provides financial assistance for educational tuition and related expenses for pre-kidney transplant patients whom are or will be undergoing dialysis treatments.

Scholarship Name: Louie Family Foundation Scholarship
Summary: Program provides a scholarship to high school students that have shown exceptional levels of achievement and are planning to attend college or a university. Preference is given to students with a documented serious medical disability.

Scholarship Name: PAF's Scholarship for Survivors
Summary: Grants twelve $3,000 scholarships to individuals under the age of 25 that are or have been diagnosed with cancer or a critical or life-threatening disease within the last five years.

Scholarship Name: Richie's Spirit Foundation
Summary: Transplant Assistance Grants in honor of Richie Herskowitz, the first double lung transplant recipient, to off-set non-medical expenses for families. Also $5,000 college scholarship available. The mission is to promote organ donation to people of all ages through education awareness programs, grants to honor Richie's memory, and inspiring others to live life with a positive spirit.

Scholarship Name: Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO) Scholarship Program
Summary: TRIO awards several non-renewable $1,000 scholarships to transplant candidates, recipients, donors, and their immediate family members each year. Applicants must be TRIO members to be eligible for the scholarship (TRIO membership dues are $20 per year).

Scholarship Name: WSAJ Past Presidents' Scholarship
Summary: The Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ) created the WSAJ Past Presidents' Scholarship Fund in 1991. Applicants must be high school seniors who have a history of achievement despite having been a victim of injury or overcoming a disability, handicap, or similar challenge and a documented need for financial assistance. They must also have a record of commitment to helping people in need or protecting the rights of injured persons and a plan or commitment to apply your education toward helping people.
